You may have seen the major recall for the MamaRoo Baby Swing and RockaRoo Baby Rockers sold by 4moms. About two million units were recalled after a death of a toddler that got entangled in a strap that formed a closed loop below the seat. We’ve seen a lot of questions on social media, so here are a few answers.
What’s being recalled?
About two million MamaRoo swings and 220,000 RockaRoo rockers sold in the U.S. are being recalled. The recall includes the MamaRoo models that use the 3-point harness and all the RockaRoo units; the affected models are listed in the recall notice so check the model number to see if your unit is included. The MamaRoo model that uses a 5-point harness is not included in this recall.
What is the danger?
When the swing or rocker is not in use, the restraint straps can hang below the seat, and because the strap is connected to the seat forming a closed loop, a child can get tangled in it. There have been two reports of entanglement incidents where infants got caught in the strap under the unoccupied MamaRoo swing after they crawled under the seat. A 10-month-old infant died from asphyxiation, and another 10-month-old infant suffered bruising to his neck before being rescued.
NOTE: The recall involves requesting and applying a clip to secure the strap and correct the hazard. The swing/rocker are safe to use while you wait for the strap if you don’t have crawling infants.
If I have this product, what do I do?
If you have infants who can crawl, you should immediately stop using the swings or rockers and place them in an area where the infants cannot get to them. Reach out to 4moms immediately to register for a free strap fastener that will prevent the straps from dangling under the swing or rocker when not in use. You can use the below contact information or register online at the 4mom website.

Is this product coming off the market?
No, the recall is to inform parents and caregivers of the hazard and provide a fix. Once the strap fastener is ordered for free from 4moms and installed, the product can be used normally. These swings and rockers are great for play time, but do not use them for sleep. Always move a child falling asleep from these products into a safe sleep surface that is flat. Remember the ABCs of safe sleep: always place an infant to sleep completely Alone on their Backs in a CPSC approved Crib, play yard, or bassinet.
What should I do while I wait for the repair?
Keep the recalled swing or rocker away from children until the fastener is installed. Two million is a lot of swings to get repaired and make safe to prevent another death, so help us spread the word by sharing the recall notice through Facebook, Twitter or Instagram with other families who might have this product.
