For 26 years, Kids In Danger (KID) has dedicated our efforts to saving lives by promoting safer product development, increasing transparency and accountability, and advocating for children. We’ve worked tirelessly to make the world safer for children and families. It is with mixed emotions that we share the news that KID will be closing its doors on December 13, 2024.
A Legacy of Change
KID was founded by Linda Ginzel and Boaz Keysar in memory of their son Danny, whose life was tragically cut short due to a poorly designed and unsafe product. Since our founding, we have:
- Held manufacturers and regulatory agencies accountable to higher safety standards.
- Collaborated with designers and engineers to prioritize safety in product design.
- Educated caregivers about safety hazards and recalls.
Through these efforts, we’ve contributed to a significant transformation in the product safety landscape, saving countless lives and preventing tragedies.
Some of our accomplishments:
- In 1999, we helped pass the Illinois Children’s Product Safety Act to prevent the sale of recalled or dangerous children’s products and their use in child care facilities. Almost a dozen other states followed suit.
- Worked with consumer group allies and many others to pass Danny’s Law, a key component of the 2008 Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act which put strong standards and mandatory testing in place for children’s products and led to many other safety improvements
- Created relatable, accurate parent and caregiver education materials to give them the tools they need to keep children safe.
- Worked for over 20 years with engineering students to build new leaders in product safety and recently launched the KID Design Safety Toolkit to provide a unique free course for designers, manufacturers, and others to create safer products for real world use.
Why We’re Saying Goodbye
Over the years, fundraising has been a constant challenge, and it has become even more difficult in recent times. But most importantly, Linda and Boaz, who have been the heart and soul of KID, feel it is time to celebrate the victories achieved and move forward.
KID has fulfilled its mission, creating a safer world for children—something Danny didn’t get the chance to experience. It’s time to honor that legacy and trust that the work will continue through others who share our vision.
The Work Continues
While KID will no longer operate, the impact of our efforts will endure through trusted partner organizations. We will have an update in our newsletter on December 4, 2024 with instructions on how to keep getting the digest from other organizations and where to find other KID information and projects.
KID will not be participating in Giving Tuesday this year, given the closing but provide this list of other nonprofit organizations working to keep your children safe.
